Transmission fluid will drain out of the fill plug if the fluid is cold and the engine not running. So, adding the two amounts together your not far off. As Tom mentioned, follow the link to the fluid replacement. I did this very recently, filter and Valvoline Maxlife fluid from pepboys. under $100.
Have 2005 TDI with 276,000 miles. Used trans put in about 50K ago, not sure mileage of that or torque converter. Transmission light this summer on and off several times. #2 Transmissions are all over the board. Mine went out at 100K but that was completely my fault. I wasn't using the parking brake and over time stressed the case enough to crack it. I just did my transmission fluid & filter service with the Blauparts kit, they provide the German made Ravenol oil, it seems fine and everything works as it should. Maybe it's just me, but I don't think that searching for the cheapest fluid is the best idea for ZF transmission.

If not, you'll e playing catch up, which could get expensive. The timing belt being replaced is a major maintence concern with any model 1.8t or v6. 1.8ts are know to have sludge issues. Continually use of synthetic motor oil with regular oil changes helps the cause. I have a 1.8t wagon with 114k. I love my car.
